ORGANISED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TAIWAN CYCLIST FEDERATION

This is the ideal tour for riders who are looking to discover more of what Taiwan has to  offer the adventurous cyclist, following the same route as the Spring KOM Tour. This 7 day (6 days cycling), 6-night tour is designed to showcase the best cycling that Taiwan in the north, east and also in the central mountain range.This tour is perfect for those participating in the 2024 Summer Road to Taiwan KOM who wish to see more of Taiwan and to experience the beauty of Taroko Gorge (on the downhill!). We aim to make your trip to Taiwan as stress-free as possible, as we will meet you at the airport, transport you to the tour hotel in Taipei, then take care of all transport to Hualien, and the Road to Taiwan KOM fees.

Over these six days of cycling we will explore Yangmingshan National Park, just 25km north of Taipei Main Station, and ride through the tea farms near Yilan on the north-east coast. We then will transfer to Taroko on the morning of Day 4, explore  30km of the Taiwan KOM route, taking it easy, and then descend back down to Taroko Gate. After an easy day on Thursday, it’s to the start line of the Taiwan KOM Challenge itself on Friday!This tour has been created to highlight the stunning scenery and roads of both northern Taipei and the eastern coast of Taiwan, taking you past glistening ocean, alongside rice paddies and of course the world famous Taiwan KOM route when you take part in the Summer Road to Taiwan KOM. We will experience the local Amis Aboriginal culture, try the local cuisine and ride around the largest lake in east Taiwan.

All in all this tour offers a great opportunity to see first hand why Taiwan is one of the world’s premier cycling destinations and to truly get a taste of the wonderfully abundant nature of the island.

NOTE: Though the 21st of June is the date set by the Taiwan Cyclist Federaration for the Summer KOM, they are awaiting official confirmation from local authorities. Therefore these dates may change. Please contact us for more details.

ITINERARY:



DAY 1 / OFFICIAL GREETING & LIGHT RIDE

June 16th  /  Sunday

Hotel Location: Taipei

Ride Distance: Elevation: 40-50 km / 200m

Grading: Easy

Meeting Point: Hotel Lobby 12pm

Post Ride: Welcome Dinner

Ride Info: Arrival Day and an easy leg-opener ride along the bike path with a stop at the oldest traditional neighbourhood in the city, and also to a local bike shop, then out for our welcome meal.





DAY 2  /  YANGMINGSHAN 

June 17th   /  Monday

Hotel Location: Taipei

Distance: Elevation: 106km / 2024m

Estimated Duration: 5-6 hours 

Route: Taipei Hotel - Yangmingshan National Park - Taipei Hotel

Grading: Challenging

Meeting Point: Departure: Hotel Lobby 8am

Post-Ride: Free Time

Ride Info: Yangmingshan remains largely undiscovered by visiting cyclists heading to Taroko Gorge and the Taiwan KOM Challenge but it offers some of the best cycling on the island. This ride provides a great introduction to the delights of cycling in Taiwan: lush jungle, well-paved roads, light traffic, great views on the way up and awesome descents on the way back. 





DAY 3 / TAIPEI - YILAN

June 18th  /  Tuesday

Hotel Location: Yilan 

Distance: Elevation: 84 km / 1410 m / 4.5 hours with stops

Route: Taipei - Pingxi - Yilan

Grading: Moderate: Challenging 

Meeting Point: Departure: Hotel Lobby 8:00am  

Post-Ride: Free Time

Ride Info: The route begins just outside the city and begins to rise almost immediately. We then descend to a scenic riverside and then up again, climbing towards Route 9. From here it’s straight all the way to Yilan, past tea fields and through small towns.





DAY 4 / TAROKO GATE & GORGE 

June 19th  /  Wednesday

Hotel Location: Hualien

Distance: Elevation: 60km / 1500m (pls note: Strava map shows incorrect elevation, it is 1500m not 3000m).

Estimated Duration: 5 hours inc. lunch stop

Route: Taroko Gorge

Grading: Easy / Careful on the descent

Meeting Point: Departure Time: Hotel Lobby 7:30am

Post-Ride: Dinner at an Aboriginal restaurant

Ride Info: We will transfer by van to Taroko Gorge and then ride up the KOM route, and descend afterwards. Enjoy the spectacular views of Taroko Gorge as you coast down the mountain to Taroko Gate, the entrance to the Gorge. This ride will familiarise you with the start of the climb and allow you to really take in the wonder of the Gorge. Those who wish to can ride along the beach road to the hotel afterwards, another 20km.





DAY 5 / HUALIEN - LIYU LAKE - HUALIEN / Or OFF

June 20th  /  Thursday

Hotel Location: Hualien

Distance: Elevation: 62 km / 614m / 3.5 hours

Route: Hualien - Liyu Tan - Hualien

 Grading: Easy 

Meeting Point: Departure Time: Hotel Lobby 8am

Post-Ride: Free Time

Ride Info: For those who want to ride, a relaxed ride that takes in the biggest lake on the east coast, Liyu Tan, and a gorgeous rolling road on the way back, followed by a beachside bicycle path cruise. Note: a day off is also an option, in preparation for the following day’s KOM event.





DAY 6  /  The TAIWAN KOM CHALLENGE

June 21st  /  Friday

Hotel Location: Taipei

Distance: 85 km (+20km for neutral zone)

Elevation: 3275 m

Estimated Duration: 5-9 hrs

Grading: Challenging / Hard (last 8km)

Meeting Point: Departure Time: Hualien hotel lobby 5am

Ride Info: The Big One! This is the must-do ride in Taiwan. The first 75km are a not-too-bad 4%, the last 8km though are where the effort really kicks in. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime event! We then drive to Taipei to check in and have out celebratory dinner. 





DAY 7 /  DEPARTURE DAY

June 22nd /  Saturday
